In\nMarch 1989, while working at CERN, Tim\nBerners-Lee wrote his first proposal for the World Wide Web and by the end of 1990 the world’s first website was\npublished. In 1993 CERN donated the WWW software to the Public Domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the Web was originally imagined as an information system to facilitate knowledge sharing across scholarly organisations, the Web quickly permeated all areas of everyday life and it is now a core part of the information infrastructures underpinning the hyper-connected world we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Web is built on top of the interconnected computer networks known as the Internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
