Universal design is a useful idea to help guide the design of\nweb content to fit the needs of your audience. This post outlines what universal\ndesign is and how you can use this idea to help create a website that is well\nconsidered and useful to your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Universal Design?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Universal design<\/a> is the design of products and environments to make them accessible to all people regardless of age, ability or other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It includes ideas of how aesthetic design choices can be\npaired with adaptability and accessibility to make something usable by everyone\nto the greatest extent possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The term \u201cuniversal design\u201d was coined by architect Ronald Mace<\/a> to describe this idea that all products and environments should be designed to be appropriately usable by all. Mace with a team of researchers at North Carolina State University came up with 7 Principles of Universal Design as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Equitable Use<\/strong> \u2013 that the design is useful to people with diverse abilities<\/li>
  2. Flexibility in Use<\/strong> \u2013 that the design accommodates a wide range of preferences and abilities<\/li>
  3. Simple and Intuitive Use<\/strong> – that the design is easy to understand regardless of experience and ability<\/li>
  4. Perceptible Information<\/strong> \u2013 that the design is easy to understand regardless of the conditions around the user or their sensory abilities<\/li>
  5. Tolerance for Error<\/strong> \u2013 that the design limits chance of misusing or breaking the design in someway<\/li>
  6. Low Physical Effort<\/strong> \u2013 that the design can be used comfortably and efficiently with minimum effort<\/li>
  7. Size and Space for Approach and Use<\/strong> \u2013 that the design can be used regardless of the user\u2019s mobility and there is space to use the design<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
