The Disruptive Media Learning Lab (DMLL) is piloting in 2016-17 a Domains of One’s Own (DoOO) initiative at Coventry University, providing participants with the possibility to have their own web space (and subdomain), so they can take full control of their online presence and develop rich personal learning and teaching environments through a wide range of web applications. Coventry.domains enable students and staff to install many different applications for web publishing, community building, information management and other purposes.
Lecturers may use this to chronicle their professional presence online, providing a user-friendly space to help them share their teaching, research, service, and publications online. Moreover, this space can be used for a wide range of applications relevant to teaching: designing sites to house course resources; creating dedicated sites for research projects, exploring new tools for teaching and learning; and sandbox for exploring emerging fields.
Unlike virtual learning environments (VLE’s) and other educational technologies that students probably won’t encounter again in the course of their professional lives, DoOO offers access to a wide range of digital tools that are commonplace in many industry sectors. The possibility of gathering and making publicly available content developed throughout their studies may enhance students’ employability, as this may help them position themselves into their respective fields and gaining visibility before entering the job market.
One of the aims of this initiative is to improve web literacy through both self-regulated learning and peer-supported learning. CU will provide documentation and development opportunities aimed at helping account owners get started with the DoOO platform and make the most of the available web applications. In addition, a community of practice will be built around the project, connecting participants and enabling opportunities to share expertise across faculties.
Each DoOO account owner is solely responsible for the information posted and/or stored by means of any of the web applications installed into their allocated web space and subdomain. Any views or opinions expressed on the websites hosted under Coventry.domains are those of their author/s and do not represent those of Coventry University.
